Hunting at Three Rivers Lodge

There is simply no more thrilling hunt than stalking caribou at Three Rivers Lodge. The rolling hills along the Woods River waterway are breathtaking and provide perfect terrain for a hunt very akin to elk hunting out west. No road hunting here – no roads!  Strike out through the hinterlands and follow caribou trails to the ridges.  Glass the craggy peaks and lowland swamps for a pod of gray bulls. Work with the wind, the lay of the land and your guide to develop a strategy and an intercept course.
The unique topography of the Woods River Watershed and the Smallwood Reservoir pushes migrating caribou through our vast hunting territory. Excellent cover in the alder and spruce thickets make bow hunting especially effective at Three Rivers. With care and stealth, fifteen to thirty yard shots are easily obtained and our bow hunters are very successful. While bow hunting is our most familiar hunting method, we also accommodate rifle and black powder enthusiasts. Bow hunters and rifle hunters pursue their quarries in separate terrain.

We hunt both along the waterway's shoreline and out in the ragged, open hills where your hunting skills and our guides experience make for extraordinary days afield.

The Province of Newfoundland makes available weekly collar tracking reports to assist in locating the caribou. Our guests travel to these locations along the extensive waterways by comfortable boats and square-stern canoes. Should caribou be in further locations, our float plane is ready to get you deeper into the bush.  Fly-outs are included in our Trophy Package and available for our “Woods River Hunt” guests for flight costs only (see pricing below). Patience is required to wait for that gray, trophy bull. Our guides will find him, the shot is yours. Each license allows for two animals that we will field dress and properly prepare for your journey home.

HANDLING OF GAME ANIMALS

Your caribou license allows you to take two animals.  The handling costs (including flight costs to get your animal to town) of your first animal are included.  We charge a $500 trophy fee for handling your second animal that may be paid in camp at the end of your stay.

The cost of handling your game animal in camp is included in the price of your hunting trip to Three Rivers Lodge.  Your caribou will be field dressed and returned to camp by your guide.  Once in camp, here is how we handle your animal:

                  •      Caribou will be caped, quartered and de-boned.

                  •      Meat will be cut up and frozen.

                  •      The cape, if you want it, will also be frozen.

                  •      Horns will be stripped of velvet, if desired, soaked and dried.  The two halves will be tipped with cardboard, taped and the rack packed in plastic for shipping.

                  •      Upon departure, your frozen meat and cape will be packed in leak-proof plastic boxes and flown out with you for your return trip on commercial airlines.
